Hosting a New Year's Eve Party in your home or apartment can be a slam dunk with our five winning tips to help you pull it off.
1. KNOW YOUR GUESTS' PREFERENCES
Wine, beer, liquor? Sparkling wine? Mixed cocktails? What do your friends prefer? Are they big drinkers? Here are some guidelines:
Have 1 bottle of wine for every 2 guests
4 bottles of beer per guest
1.75 bottle of vodka, etc. for 8-10 guests
1 bottle of champagne or sparkling wine for every 4 guests to toast at midnight. Sparkling wines have come a long way and you don't have to spend a lot of money on imported champagne.
Make adjustments depending on how much your friends and family like to drink. And don't forget the designated drivers or the guests who don't drink. Have fun beverages on hand for them, too, like sparkling apple ciders and Virgin Mary mocktails.
2. CREATE A FUN SIGNATURE COCKTAIL
It doesn't have to be elaborate. You can pour sparkling wine in a fun glass, add a garnish or simple prop you buy from Party City and you're created your own signature drink. For example, tie a ribbon or curly serpentine around the stem of each glass.
Balloons add fun to any party or event. Consider doing a monochromatic theme to go for a classy touch. Golds, silvers, black and white work well for New Year's Eve. You don't have to spend a lot of money. Throw a pack of serpentines around the room, and you are pretty much good to go for New Year's!
4. OFFER SIMPLE FOODS
Have dishes of nuts, chips and dips, veggies and cheese around for guests to nibble on and take a walk down the frozen aisle of your supermarket and see what types of store-bought appetizers would be easy to microwave and offer. Keeping food available will help prevent your guests from getting tipsy and ruining their -- and your -- New Year's.
Have coffee available for guests that need a boost during the night, especially as you wind things down. Make sure your guests are safe to travel and drive. It is your responsibility to not let anyone leave with their car keys if they have had too much to drink.
