Match Your Bar Stools With Your Home Bar Theme

The Right Bar Stool For Your Design

There are almost as many types of Bar Stools as there are bar themes. This is a good thing because the stool is a major component of your bar furniture and to the overall look and feel of your home bar.

Besides just picking out a style to match your bar design or bar theme, there are other factors to look at when trying to make a decision on bar seating.

If the bar itself is in place, the height of the bar seating you choose is the first bit of importance. A bar stool that doesn't match the bar height for comfortable seating is next to worthless. Here are some general guidlines for bar or counter stool height:

As a general rule, the top of the seating surface of your bar seats should be about 12" lower than the lowest part of the bar top or countertop. This gives you a comfortable position for the arms in relation to the bar. For example, a tall bar at 42" should have 30" stools. You might have an extra
tall bar at 48". In that case, a bar stool of 36" is perfect, although they are a little tougher to find.

Another factor to consider when choosing bar seating and stools for a home bar has to do a little with both comfort as well as the good bar design and the theme of the home bar. Does your bar theme call for stools with high backs or low backs?

A high-backed bar stool tends to go well with a classic pub or tavern look. A backless or low-backed stool might fit well with a modern bar. Of course, these are only guidelines. But if you've done some research and have your bar theme down pat, you'll already have a good idea what kind of stools you want.

Bar and counter stools are made from any number of kinds of materials. Stools made mostly out of wood are the most common. The nicer ones sometimes have leather seat cushions, and thickly padded. You may be trying for a retro look and want shiny chrome counter stools with thick vinyl seats to match that theme. All are excellent options.

Some bar stools are closer to plush chairs on higher legs. This is something you might see at a piano bar or some other upscale bar. It's all a matter of preference and choice.

You may not be adding seating for a bar at all, but for maybe a kitchen
counter.

Some other non-conventional seating is a possibility also. There's a saloon in Fort Worth, Texas that has real riding saddles mounted on top of the legs. That would be perfect for a saloon theme home bar.

If you'd like something a little more interesting than just what you can buy from a department store, start thinking about bar stools that no one else could possibly have, and create your own. Just make sure it goes with your chosen theme, unless that theme is not having a bar theme at all.
